Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next match against Finnish KuPS ought to be sufficient to seal straight entry to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were no match against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
