European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
